Face Of A Nation: What Happened To The World’s Fair: Special Film Screening & Reception at Robinson Film Center

August 23, 2018

A special screening of the film Face Of A Nation: What Happened To The World’s Fair? by director and architect Mina Chow, will take place Thursday, August 23 at the Robinson Theater. The event is a North Louisiana extension of the Architecture & Design Film Festival: New Orleans (ADFF: NOLA) presented by the Louisiana Architecture Foundation (LAF) more info: www.adfilmfest.com, which takes place in New Orleans Aug. 23 – Aug. 26.

The film is autobiographical, telling Chow’s story as the daughter of Chinese immigrants who was fascinated with America’s World Fairs. Chow fell in love with World’s Fairs when she saw pictures of her parents at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Beginning with their stories, Chow shares this legacy and the American values that inspired her to become an architect. The film shows her visiting China’s first World's Fair, the Shanghai World Expo. But what she discovers in China destroys her confidence as an American architect. With her dream destroyed, Chow begins a search for answers … to find out what happened to the vision of World’s Fairs ... and what happened to America.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. with a reception for the Los Angeles director taking place on the second floor of the Robinson. Showtime begins at 6 p.m., first with the premiere of an LAF short film produced by Rational Middle Media about Sam and William Wiener, Shreveport’s pioneering modernist architects. Immediately after the screening of Face Of A Nation, a Q & A session with Chow will cap off the evening.

The event’s sponsors are American Institute of Architects, Shreveport; Coe Architecture; Louisiana Architecture Foundation; and the Shreveport Downtown Development Authority.
