American Rose Society Gulf District Mid-Winter Workshop Scheduled for Shreveport in February 2019

The Gulf District of the American Rose Society will present their annual Mid-Winter Workshop - “Making Your Garden Great” - February 8-9, 2019 at the American Rose Center in Shreveport, LA at 8877 Jefferson Paige Road, Shreveport.

Ken Kelley, Gulf District Director, says the program is not just for rose growers but anyone interested in home ornamental gardening. This workshop covers what plants to choose, basics of soil and water, interpreting testing results, common pest and diseases, and much more. From novice to expert there is something for everyone at the 2019 Workshop. All are invited to submit entries to our photo contest, winner to be showcased at the event. The Workshop kicks off with a flower arrangement class at 3:00 p.m. on Friday followed by a wine social and banquet. The evening keynote speaker is Kristopher Kelley who will present “Year of the River – How Steam Brought Gardens to the South”.

The Saturday program will begin at 8:00 a.m. with talks on several topics followed by a luncheon that will feature American Rose Society Gulf District award presentations and the announcement of the 2019 Gulf District Rose of the Year.

Paul Zimmerman, renowned rosarian will be the keynote speaker on Saturday. Other speakers will include:

 Gaye Hammond, Houston Rose Society
 Dr. Allen Owings, Senior Horticulturist with Bracy’s and Cleggs Nurseries
 Paul Zimmerman, Jackson and Perkins

Topics to be presented include rose disease identification and management, safety in the garden, soil/water/fertilizer, soil testing, using structures in your landscape, keys to landscape design and more. The program will include a silent auction, which will include rose bushes, ornamental plants, books and other garden related items. New roses from K & M Rose Nursery in Buckatunna, MS will be available for purchase.
